Their energetic style has gained them new fans and helped keep the loyal fans.
“Evolution” is a fitting title for the new album as they have been through a lot and learned a lot and continue to bring the music. I was able to get in touch with Trauma, drummer for (hed) PE since 2009, as a part of their visit to Houston’s Scout Bar on July 11, 2014.
Brandy Brown: For those who have possibly never heard your music before; describe your sound.
Trauma: Our songs have many different flavors of music. I would say it has a solid heavy rock to metal foundation with seasonings of funk, soul, reggae, hiphop and even classic rock.
BB: Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Trauma: Man, I could write a book based on that question, there are so many! But to name a few, Alice in Chains, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Jay Z, Bob Marley, Doobie Brothers… The list goes on!
BB: Tell me a little about the writing process your band goes through?
Trauma: It usually starts with an outline created by Jackson, and Mark and I get a chance to expand on that. Then Jahred comes through with the vocals and producing of the songs. Also, some of our favorite material comes from just jamming and having fun playing improvised music together.
Trauma: Well, being the drummer, I can only share my take on the lyrics. And to me, the songs are typically about everyday life. Our new record, entitled “Evolution,” means a lot to all of us. Not only from a band stand point of how (hed) PE has evolved over the years, but all of us evolving on a personal level too. Many songs share experiences with partying and having fun, to our everyday struggles with life, to views on politics. Critics can dig it or not, it doesn’t affect us.
BB: In your opinion, what is the best way to promote your band and shows?
Trauma: I’m not much of a promoter myself, so I couldn’t tell you the details of why some promotion works and why others don’t. But I have noticed that social media and word of mouth is so effective in this day and age of technology.
BB: Describe your show, visually and musically.
Trauma: One thing is for sure… every one of us leaves it all out there on stage. Visually, we all are high energy and purely enjoy every moment on stage together. Based on what I’ve heard from every fan, that translates real well. Musically, you’ll get a wide range of good music from heavy rock, reggae, punk, hiphop and funky metal. It may sound overwhelming to someone who hasn’t seen us, but rest assured that after 20 years of touring and providing this product to the masses, we know how to deliver it well.
BB: What’s your outlook on the record industry today? I know (hed) p.e. has personally gone through a few.
Trauma: I don’t have much to say about the industry other than it is a constantly changing one that requires all involved to diligently stay on top of your game. It can all change in the blink of an eye.
BB: What inspires you to do what you do?
Trauma: My love for music keeps me in this industry. Coming from a family of musicians, it is in my blood to do this. I can’t explain the feeling of shredding the drums other than pure euphoria, and that “high” is going to be a part of my life until I die.
BB: What are some of your pet peeves?
Trauma: Being the passenger in a car with a horrible driver… Ugh, that KILLS me! Lack of common sense and ignorance are also huge ones with me!
BB: How does music affect you and the world around you?
Trauma: Oh man, music is just a part of my everyday existence. I practically have a soundtrack for my life because I rarely take off my headphones! Hahaha, but I feel like nothing compliments a situation more than the appropriate music. So whether it’s a frustrating day or a most EXCELLENT day, the music can tame or amplify it with its energy and I use it accordingly.
Trauma: Every one of us comes from a very diverse musical background with proficiency in many different genres. Combine that with our united desire to tastefully blend them together into one product, and you have (hed) PE! This line up has been together for six years and we all not only get along, but have acquired life-long friendships in this journey. So our personalities being meant to be together also plays a big role in how well we work and create together.
BB: How would people communicate in a perfect world?
Trauma: Just be upfront and honest without beating around the bush and you seem to get the best possible outcome every time… Be it a happy one, OR a negative one.
BB: How can fans reach out to you?
Trauma: All of our fans can reach out to us on our facebook at www.facebook.com/hedpe. We love hearing from you guys so please stay in touch!
BB: A penguin walks through the door wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?
Trauma: “Hola! I’m Cilantro and I’m here to party dudes!!”
BB: One last question. What kitchen utensil would you be? And why? And you can’t say spork!
Trauma: Meat grinder cuz WE GRIND’EM UP!!!
