Evolution is defined as the gradual development of something, especially from a simple to a more complex form. “Evolution” is a fitting title for the upcoming release on July 22, 2014 and is especially true of (hed) PE throughout their long career.
They have never stopped touring and have never stopped releasing albums and every album is something a little different and something a little more intense and through it all they have grown as a band and as a sound. (hed) PE has taken their signature infusion of punk and G-funk inflected hip-hop and taken it to a whole new level in “Evolution.”
This album has more metal woven in and it even has a bit of what made the 70’s great in songs like “2 Many Games.” Many of the songs highlight many of the struggles that each one of us goes through daily and reiterates that we are not alone. Jahred’s has a reggae vocal style in a lot of the songs and somehow uses those styles and applies it to metal growls. Jaxon’s guitar style is heavy and grinding on almost all songs. The bass played by Mark shifts in ranges from punchy to funky and the drumming by Trauma is just brutal on all but the slower songs.
Once you get to the last three songs on the album things slow down and you get thrown into a reggae groove. I feel like I should be on an island getaway with a piña colada. It really breaks up the album and yet it somehow doesn’t feel disjointed but gives a refreshing change. One thing you can definitely say about (hed) PE is that their songs do not all sound alike. This album is worth the listen in my opinion. It has a little bit of everything and is largely eclectic so if you like everything ranging from classic metal to the chill grooves of reggae then you will most certainly like the “Evolution” of (hed) PE.
(hed) PE has something to say so listen and “grind em’ up”. Pick this album up next Tuesday July 22nd.
