Musically, however, Alice does have a history… as the birthplace of Tejano. The small town was the home to the first-ever recording studio dedicated solely to Tejano artists — in the 1940s.
What Alice is NOT known for, though, is metal. One group of Alice locals are trying to change that.Vocalist Marcos Leal said that initially, their hometown’s reputation as a Tejano city, along with the area’s blue collar mentality, presented a challenge for the band.
“It’s hard coming from where we (did) because the metal scene is small. It’s difficult coming through that scene. There are very few outlets where you can play, and you can be looked down upon. You’re supposed to work out in the oil fields,” Leal explained. “Coming from a city like that, as soon as you graduate, you’re either leaving to go to college or going onto the oil rigs.”
Still, with hard work — writing and playing steadily for more than a decade — the group slowly began to make a name for themselves in the Texas Coastal Bend. Leal said the band first got a taste of success in 2011, when they got a chance to play some tour dates around the country as a supporting act for a number of high profile metal acts.
“That opened our eyes to the national scene and what we needed to do,” said Leal, explaining that the level of professionalism and business acumen required to make the move from playing local bars and clubs to become a national touring act took the guys by surprise a little.
“But we figured it out, and got a lot of guidance,” Leal said. “We’ve never had management prior to this, and we were self funded. Our agenda was always to spread our music, with a mindset to touring.”Eventually, Shattered Sun landed a spot on the 2013 Mayhem Festival in Austin, which helped connect them with management company Breaking Bands, who signed the group, brought them to Los Angeles for a date with Skid Row at the world famous Whisky A Go Go in May, and then a coveted spot on San Antonio’s second annual River City Rock Fest this summer — which featured hard rock and metal heavyweights Five Finger Death Punch, Black Label Society and Hellyeah.
Looking back, Leal said Shattered Sun is proud of what they’ve accomplished, and where they come from, and credited the growing support they’ve received both locally and regionally has been instrumental in helping the group reach their current level of success.
“It’s a dream come true. We put everything we have into our shows, and whether it’s a dream show like (River City Rock Fest) or a hometown show, it means a lot to us and we give it everything we have.
