Since Josh Abbott formed the Josh Abbott Band in 2006, while attending Texas Tech University, the group has helped defined the ‘red dirt’ country music scene that has helped bring country music back to its roots while establishing the state of Texas as ground zero for the new generation of country.
Abbott’s love for his home state is apparent throughout each of his songs, and is one of the reasons JAB quickly connected with fans and the band continues to sell out shows in and out of the Lone Star State.
The group’s first three albums were produced and released independently, and collectively sold more than 175,000 copies, with his third album, “Small Town Family Dream” reaching the No. 5 spot on the Billboard Country Albums Chart.
That kind of success caught the attention of Atlantic Records, which signed the group and ultimately released the group’s first major-label release, the five-track EP “Tuesday Night,” on September 23, 2014.
Fiddle player Preston Waite, who has been with the band since 2008, said, “We just got to a point where we… wanted to take it to a national level. It’s really difficult as an independent band trying to reach new markets. Atlantic was super cool. They didn’t want to change anything, they just wanted to help us get to those new markets.”
To finish off 2014, JAB will play a few smaller shows that Waite says are among the group’s most enjoyable gigs to play.
“It’s cool playing these local shows,” said Waite. “When we play (these smaller venues) the true fans come out.”
JAB is also playing one major show — the Eli Young Band’s House Party at Minute Maid Park in Houston on Saturday, Nov. 15.
“Right when we started playing shows (Eli Young) had us open for them in Stephenville. They’ve helped us so much to get where we are right now. (This show) is on a bigger level, so it’s really great.”
After the few remaining shows in 2014, the band will take a break for the holidays and continue working to get on a major tour for next year.
“We hit it really hard, like 120 shows a year, but we always take off for the holidays to be with family.”
