Shawn Hamilton here from The One Magazine at BFE Rock Club and I’m proud to introduce to you a somewhat new band with some veteran players, The Chosen!
I will let the guys introduce themselves to you and tell us where we might have seen you before:
Spencer Ray Selph: I played with myself (laughs).
Kendall Mason: I sing and most recently for A Beautiful Disgrace.
Austin Gartman: Drums and I also have played for Mystic Cross for 25 years and about 1000 other bands..
Jeremy Dusek: Bass with Tommy , Shadow Code and many more and I also play with Spencer also(laughs)
Bobby Fikes: and I play with anybody that has money (Laughs)
SH: So I know you guys well and have even shared the stage with most of you before but this is a new project so tell us how “The Chosen came about?
BF: I woke up after having bad dreams for a few weeks and I started writing the lyrics down and my brother said we need to put music to those so we did. I got with Spencer a few months later and started writing some more songs and putting in some covers, having fun adding props and here we are and I think it turned out pretty cool.
SH: I know some of you have backgrounds in horror films and seeing how the Halloween Holiday has grown so much and themes have grown over the last decade and how you have incorporated it into the Chosen, will this be a project of sort or is this something you want to keep going?
BF: Yeah, this is my main original band right now.
KM: We want this to keep going. It’s now the only band for some of us.
AG: Yes, we want it to be something on going.
SS: Hopefully people come to see us and like us.
BF: Yeah, if people don’t like us, we’ll sacrifice something…
JD: Besides our time (laughs).
SH: Coming from someone who is in an original rock band in Houston, how do you feel the original scene is holding up in Houston?
BF: I feel like it’s horrible.
KM: Some of it’s good and some is bad. The musicianship has actually gotten better, you know all of the musicians are nicer to each other than they used to be.
AG: Yeah, it’s not easy in Houston.
SH: I am a strong supporter of original bands and I just try to push original music in Houston. I don’t think it gets the credit it deserves with so many good musicians in this city having to play in cover and tribute bands to get gigs.
BF: I have to do it to make a living…
JD: Frankie and BFE has always been a big supporter for that.
SH: So do you plan on releasing any material?
BF: My brother and I recorded three or four songs already, and we want to record the ones and add to those.
SH: So one reason we’re all here tonight is to celebrate guitarist Spencer’s birthday so Happy Birthday!
SS: Yes, it is my Birthday and I’m 23, (laughs).
JD: And he’s gonna play with himself (laughs).
SH: So as the rain starts to fall on us this evening, anyone want to let us know what’s coming up for you all?
BF: Yes, Spencer, Austin and myself host the open mic nights at Vintage Pub on Sundays, so come jam with us.
SS: We also have a tribute band called SKAB.
SH: Tell us about that because I have seen the name around.
SS: It’s a Guns and Roses Tribute band and it’s the club owner’s favorite band.
SH: In the past we have had bands get together and put out a compilation CD, and I think it’s time to do another one.
BF: That would be a great idea.
AG: Yeah, we could all get together on that for sure.
SS: Have you seen us live?
SH: No, I have not and I see the hinting of there being some costumes antics planned for the show tonight.
KM: Yeah, some of our members require some makeup.
SS: Yeah, we’re all fans of horror.
JD: Whore? (laughs).
AG: Everyday is Halloween with the Chosen.
SH: How would you classify your music?
BF: Monster Metal.
SH: And with that, it’s show time so we will let these guys get ready to rock the stage and expect you all to be there the next show for the Chosen which will be April 24th at the Vintage Pub.
